The total number of cybersecurity-related grants dropped by 17% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Cybersecurity in Consumer – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.

Notably, the number of cybersecurity-related patent applications in the consumer industry was 250 in Q3 2022, versus 330 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 32% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that GuangDong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications filed the most cybersecurity patents within the consumer industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 38 cybersecurity-related patents in the quarter, compared with 41 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Brother Industries with 15 cybersecurity patent filings, Toshiba (12 filings), and Vivo Communication Technology (9 filings) in Q3 2022.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 29% share of total patent filings

The largest share of cybersecurity related patent filings in the consumer industry in Q3 2022 was in China with 29%, followed by the US (20%) and Japan (9%). The share represented by China was 4% lower than the 33% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
